Installing the Required Software and Testing

There are four steps with joining an Elluminate Live! session. Follow the information in the “First Time Users” section of the Elluminate Support page. Note that you must have admin rights to your computer.

  1. This page will indicate if you have Java installed. If you do not, follow the instructions to install Java.
  2. Click on the link to join the Configuration Room. This will test your connection and allow you to configure your audio.
  3. Review additional materials to learn how to use Elluminate Live! to get the most out of your session.
  4. Make sure to test with the Verizon Access New Jersey Elluminate Live! servers by connecting to our "Test Session" listed on the Public session page from the same location you are planning to connect to your session from.

Once you have completed these four steps successfully you should be ready. Just follow the instructions from your organization or instructor moderating  the session you will attend.

If you are having trouble connecting contact your system administrator for assistance. You may be experiencing a firewall or proxy issue. Your computers personal Firewall may need to be set to allow an Elluminate session (or be turned off).

Security

The Verizon Access New Jersey Elluminate Live! servers are configured for maximum security using SSL (installed Verisign Certificates using "https"). This means the login and management activity is all SSL encrypted (so all authentication is secure), just like when you use online banking. In addition, the conference sessions (meetings) themselves are also encrypted.

When in a Session on the Verizon Access New Jersey Elluminate Live! servers you will notice the "lock" icon is closed on the lower left portion of the Elluminate UI (see image).

Feature Reports

The following documents provide an overview of key features of Elluminate Live!

Mac OS X Issues (rare)

After a recent Java update for Mac OS X, some Mac users have reported problems launching Elluminate. Apparently, the location of Java Web Start was changed.

Here is a possible solution:

Navigate to:  Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> CoreServices folder. Just opening this folder should cause the launch services database to be rebuilt. Therefore should cause Java Web Start to get re-registered with the launch services database and allow Elluminate to now launch. Just try joining the Elluminate Live! session again.

If Elluminate still does not launch, try this. Use Finder to see if you have any files called meeting.jnlp, or any other .jnlp files, on your Mac (usually in your Download folder). If not, try joining an Elluminate session, which should cause a new meeting.jnlp file to be downloaded to your Mac.

After locating a .jnlp file, Right-click on the .jnlp file and select 'Get Info'. Under Get Info, locate the section labeled 'Open With' and select 'Java Web Start'. Now, click on the button that says 'Change All'. This should fix it.

Some Mac users have also reported problems with older versions of Elluminate. This is being investigated by Elluminate Support Team.

Other Issues or Problems

  • Running Elluminate in a virtual environment such as VMware or Parallels is not recommended!
  • PC headset or a USB speakerphone be used for ALL participants if they intend to use audio. This is due to acoustic echo and outside noise that can disrupt a session. DO NOT depend on software echo cancellation running on your computer! This utilizes a lot of computer resources and usually does not work very well.
