A unique video conferencing program was offered through the
Passaic Valley High
School in New Jersey. Inspired by a statement from Secretary of
State Colin L. Powell, the purpose of this project is to bring students
from different cultures and backgrounds together to promote global
awareness and understanding. This was accomplished through a combination
of live videoconferencing provided by the Access New Jersey Video Portal
, real time e-mail and online chats with 15 countries around the world
during one 24-hour period. To participate in this conference :

NEWARK, N.J. - Troops of the 2nd Battalion (M), 113 Infantry,
New Jersey Army National Guard, recently returned from a year of
duty at Guantnamo Bay (GITMO), Cuba, said "thanks" to Verizon and
the Newark Museum for making it possible to see and speak with their
loved ones last November and December.
The recognition is part of the Army National Guards Freedom
Salute Campaign, a program that accords special honors to
individuals and organizations for their support of the soldiers and
their families. Verizon received the Center of Influence
award.
The Newark Museum hosted three video-teleconferences (VTC) and
Verizon provided the broadband technology and support in a
partnership during the 2005 Holiday season called Project Heart to
Heart.

During the VTC events, soldiers had the opportunity to see and
speak with their children, wives, girlfriends, parents and friends
for the first time in more than six months.
More than 100 soldiers and their loved ones attended ceremonies
in their honor at the Newark Armory on August 7th. The soldiers, who
were mobilized for a year of duty, received a U.S. flag, a
commemorative coin, a lapel insignia and a Defender of Freedom
certificate. Their spouses and children also received mementos.
Verizon's Mark Bocchieri, Eric Kulmala, Stephen Antonucci and Dan
Cleary accepted a framed print of the American Flag at the event on
behalf of Verizon. Along with others at Verizon, they contributed
their time, effort and technical skills to the Project Heart to
Heart program.

NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey State Library will have a new
broadband network that will improve high-speed Internet access for
the more than 300 libraries in the state’s Hub Libraries system and
provide other features as well, thanks to a $1.75 million grant from
Verizon.
The new network is expected to be in place by the first quarter of
2006. The grant is being provided through Verizon’s Access New
Jersey program.
Project Heart to Heart

Verizon joined forces with the United States Army Reserve to host Heart
to Heart videoconferences, connecting local families with their loved
ones serving in Baghdad, Iraq. Members of the 98th Division of
the Alexander Hamilton United States Army Reserve center based in Lodi,
New Jersey participated in a town hall meeting as well as private family
videoconferences with military members stationed in Baghdad.
Through technology provided by the Verizon Access New Jersey program,
these videoconferences are making it possible for military members
stationed in places like Iraq, Egypt and Cuba to communicate in real
time with their families.
Stories appeared in the
Star Ledger, The Times, The Record, Hasbrouck Heights Observer, and the Trentonian newspapers as well
as being featured on News 12, WB, CBS, ABC news.
